I haven't gotten in the habit of keeping track of when special days or months are related to social justice topics so it took me by surprise when I discovered that July is Disability Pride month!

Given that, I quickly changed my publishing schedule around to prioritize a big disability-related project I had been working on but... it's not done yet. So in the mean time, in lieu of a new blog post this week, I thought I'd offer you a compilation of my favorite articles about disability, chronic illness, and mental health that I've written over the years.

You can also check out the disability,...

CN: Extensive discussion of the experience of chronic illness, the emotional experience of living during the pandemic, brief discussion of ableism, grief, and financial hardships.

The era of Covid-19 has been a strange time for folks with chronic illness. For anyone with pre-existing conditions that make catching the virus more dangerous, it has been a scary time with the already high stakes that surround our health getting even higher. But recently, everyone else's world has gotten a whole lot closer to the reality of what it’s like to live with chronic illness and as a result, they too are...

CN: extensive discussion of ableist cultural narratives

Before 2014, I knew very little about the concept of disability or disability activism. Believing myself to be able-bodied, I had been protected from the whole world of problems disabled people face as a result of a society that isn’t built for them

My journey to identifying as a disabled person was anything but clear cut. Before the injury that flipped my life upside-down, I thought that my pre-existing health issues were within the range of normality. And once it was discovered my sudden uptick in pain was injury-based, I had no rea...

CN: brief discussion of sexuality, sexism influenced medical neglect, reproductive disorders, and disability.

Remember my interview about sex and disability last month on the podcast Into Your Body

Story time: Before that podcast was recorded, Vi La Bianca, a previous guest blogger for Yopp, invited me to come onto her youtube show Secular Sexuality to discuss sex and disability. To be honest, I felt nervous about interviewing about a topic I don't particularly specialize in-- while I talk about disability all the time, sex isn't a common topic for me, and I've only had one partner since b...

A few weeks ago I got together with my friend DJ and we had a conversation about disability and sex for his podcast Into Your Body. Dj’s podcast explores some progressive takes on sexuality and your relationship with your body, particularly exploring how these topics intersect with particular marginalizations.

This was my very first podcast and my first recorded interview and I had a really good time talking about some of the deeper nuances of disability and how many of the strategies that you should be using to related to disabled people around sex are the same strategies that benefit you n...

After my "Close the Camps" article went semi-viral I received a lot of messages and emails from people interested to talk to me, compliment my work, and get my input on their options for activism. It was a big shift from the level of activity around my blog that I'm used to!

But perhaps one of the most exciting contacts I made from this process was writer and poet Jamie Dedes reaching out to me, asking me if she could interview me for her blog The Poet by Day, a website with focus on poetry, writers--especially new ones-- and the occasional sprinkle of activism. She also let me know that she...

CN: Detailed descriptions of the experience of pain and other health issues, discussion of chronic pain, disability, chronic illness.

My chronically ill friends and I joke about the medicine cabinet worth of supplies we take with us on any trip that’s longer than an hour because we never know what we’re going to need. Going to an appointment: Water, meds, lip balm, hip-brace, sweatshirt. For work: All of that plus lotion, white flower oil (think Vick’s vapor rub), sinus spray, anti-chafe balm, a second pain med in case my normal one isn’t enough, wrist braces, and elbow brace. Packing for a...

CN: institutional, social, and internalized ableism

This was not the blog post I had planned to write this week.

Earlier this week, as I was crossing the parking lot toward a grocery store, I noticed a man sitting on a motorcycle. It caught my attention because he was parked near the disability parking spots. I looked again and realized he was parking over one of the striped spaces between the disability spots.

Only recently, I learned what those striped areas are for. They provide customers with wheelchairs space to lower their ramp or lift out of their car so that they can enter and exit...

CN: discussion of weight gain, loss, and body image issues; chronic pain, depression

In the months after I injured my sacrum, I gained a lot of weight. I went from walking everywhere and working an extremely physically taxing job to almost no physical activity at all. My diet wasn't unhealthy, but I was used to eating whatever I wanted. After I got hurt, my diet didn't change and my intake of comfort foods slightly increased to cope with the pain. I gained about 30 pounds, and on a frame as small of mine, even a small amount of weight gain is fairly obvious.

My body shape changed. Despite my...
