Back in our early days of social justice work when most of what we knew about was the forms of oppression specific to women, an important part of our journey to empowerment was establishing for ourselves the idea that we could enjoy and appreciate our appearance, and that of others, while still treating them as a human. This value was particularly strong in the social circles we frequented but no where was it stronger between us and our best friend.
As such, this meme became incredibly important to the lore of our friendship:
Neither of us remember who posted the meme on who’s facebook wall first, but we quoted it to each other on a regular basis for several years.
Time passed and the phrases became less frequently used. Until the end of last November when it suddenly popped into our head again and we realized two things: 1. This meme would make an excellent merch design and 2. We had to make and print the design as a gift to our best friend before we could share it with the rest of the world.
We got to work, finishing the design within a week so that we’d have time to upload it and order it from Redbubble as a Christmas gift. I’m happy to say that not only did the gift go over extremely well, the resulting design would also make for an excellent Valentine’s or Galentine’s Day gift!
Edit: Not all of these products are still available. This design has been moved to our Etsy store. You can still get it as a greeting card in our Zazzle store, or as a mug or sticker on Etsy.
All of our designs are original and besides our logo, they were all created by me! When you buy from our Redbubble store, 15-30% of the cost goes directly to Yopp, so this is an easy and fun way you can support our work. Thank you!
