If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you may have noticed that things have changed a little bit around here! And that’s because Yopp now officially has its own logo!!!!
A few months ago, I began brainstorming ideas for potential merchandise for Yopp (specifics to be announced later) and realized that if I was going to make merch, I needed a logo. I really had no idea what I wanted in a logo and while I have some basic drawing and design skills, I’m really not enough of an artist to create a professional logo from start to finish.
I looked through some logo making tools online for ideas, brainstormed for a while until I came up with this sketch:
I took this design to the amazing Lauren Ashbury (be sure to check out the rest of her work here), and together we formulated this lovely new logo:
The name Yopp is a reference to Dr. Seuss’s “Horton Hears a Who” in which the smallest Who climbs to the highest peak in Who-ville, shouts “YOPP!” and that yopp is what pushes the Whos’ noise level over the threshold to where the other animals can hear them and begin to take their existence seriously. As I talk about in Yopp’s origin story, this image really reminded me of what it feels like to be a marginalized person fighting to be heard. It is terrifying and exhilarating and empowering and primal.
I wanted to capture that feeling in the logo, with the Y for Yopp and the rising sun forming a celebratory person shouting from the top of the mountains to everyone below. The oval and the ribbon (Lauren’s ideas) were a nod to Yopp’s connection to education and our own version of academics. And we kept primarily to the colors that have been associated with Yopp’s website design all along.
Now this logo can be displayed anywhere Yopp’s work goes!
Over the next few months, I’ll be working on developing merchandise using the new logo, including things like t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags! If you want to be the first to know about these developments and potentially even have input on what products are available, sign up for the $1 tier of my patreon! These patrons get the news about Yopp before anyone else does.
